"As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated by making things," recalls John Geraghty. "As a young boy, building sets were my passion: building forts, toys, models. These were the days of wonder."
Summers in college were spent working in different trades. "I was a carpenter's helper, stone masons helper, roofer, sider, etc. I had an aptitude for each trade and really enjoyed working with my hands."
"For the most part I am a self taught woodworker and carpenter. As far as the direction of my designs goes, I use a synthesis of Japanese, shaker, arts and crafts, art nouveau, and organic form to present each piece of wood."
John thought of the name for his business, Grain of Thought, while sitting in a traffic jam in Manhattan, where he was based for several years. Hoping to better establish his business in the city, Geraghty arrived at his sister’s apartment with a truck full of tools and machinery.
"Before I knew it I had my own shop in the Meat Packing District," he said. Now in Brooklyn, John still loves what he does, and keeps an eye toward moving West.
"One thing for certain is that when I wake up tomorrow morning and later find myself in my shop doing what I love to do, I will give thanks and continue to follow my bliss," he said.
